Rex
Darrell Berry

Rex Darrell Berry represents employers in all
facets of business and employment litigation, including discrimination
and wrongful discharge suits, in state and federal court. He also
counsels employers in all aspects of business and employment law. Mr.
Berry has worked with several clients to develop and defend mandatory
arbitration programs for resolution of employment disputes. He was a
principal member of the team that successfully represented Circuit City
Stores, Inc. in Circuit City Stores, Inc. v. Adams, a landmark Supreme
Court decision on the issue of mandatory arbitration.
Mr. Berry has vast trial experience before judges, juries and
arbitrators. He is an accomplished appellate advocate with appearances
before the U.S. Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Tenth and
Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeal, and many state appellate and Supreme
Courts.
While Mr. Berry is an aggressive litigator, his highest priority is the
avoidance of litigation by addressing problems before they arise. He
provides comprehensive review and recommendations on business and
employment policies and practices to proactive employers. When
litigation becomes necessary, he employs thorough and aggressive
litigation tactics to net the best result at the least expense. He
represents management only, in both administrative and judicial forums.
Mr. Berry has over twenty years of business, labor and employment
law practice with other firms. He started with Paul, Hastings, Janofsky
& Walker (Los Angeles) after graduating from the Emory University
School of Law (Atlanta) in 1983. He relocated to Seattle, Washington, in
1987, to practice with Perkins Coie, and then with Davis, Grimm &
Payne, where he became a partner in 1995 and a Senior Partner in 1997.
Prior to forming Berry & Block, Mr. Berry was a Shareholder with
Livingston & Mattesich in Sacramento, California.
Mr. Berry graduated with honors from Wake Forest University in 1980. He
is a member of the California, Washington, and Georgia bar associations.
He speaks frequently at seminars and lectures on current issues in labor
and employment law. He
lives in Davis, California, with his wife, Janet, and two children, Max
and Monica.
Ilene
Goldstein Block

Ilene Block provides business owners and executives with experienced legal
counsel in the areas of corporate, commercial, franchise, real estate and
intellectual property law. Ms. Block
most often operates like an outside general counsel, handling the numerous ongoing,
legal needs of her clients.
In over twenty years of practice, Ms. Block has assisted clients in the
various stages of the life cycle of any business. These stages often include the formation of
the business, the ongoing operation and growth of the business as well as the
sale or eventual closing of the business.
During this cycle, Ms. Block has advised her clients on commonly
occurring issues which include: (1)
properly maintaining the business' legal entity; (2) handling employee
matters; (3) negotiating, drafting and reviewing contracts, leases, both real
property and equipment, handling financing issues and options; (4) dealing
with numerous issues between owners; (5) discussing tax matters and related
planning; and, (6) the sale or transition of the business and retirement of
the current owners or management.
Ms. Block prides herself on educating her clients on how best to use her
services to minimize their legal bills by minimizing their legal
entanglements. Ms. Block has many long
time clients who call her regularly to discuss both routine business issues
as well as material, strategic and long term business decisions.
Ms. Block earned her law degree at the University
of California, Davis in 1984. She graduated from California
State University,
Fullerton,
and earned her bachelor's degree in business administration with high honors,
with a double emphasis in accounting and finance in 1981.
Ms. Block has been practicing law since 1984. She began her career as
corporate counsel with Price Waterhouse Tax Department primarily handling tax
research matters. Ms. Block then spent
several years as in-house counsel to the Restaurant Enterprises Group, Inc.
(formerly a division of W.R. Grace, Inc.) handling a wide variety of
corporate matters, including contract drafting and review, oversight of all
restaurant leases as well as all corporate trademarks and service marks. She moved to Sacramento in 1989 to accept a position as
in-house counsel to Sacramento Savings Bank where she continued the same type
of work, while also handling the bulk of the bank's mergers and acquisitions
and its corporate maintenance. She
then returned to private practice where she developed a large book of
business by representing local, regional and national companies. Prior to forming Berry & Block LLP,
Ms. Block was a principal with Livingston & Mattesich
Law Corporation (now Greenberg Trauig, LLP).
Scott
M. Plamondon

Scott
M. Plamondon serves business clients in intellectual property (IP)
transactions and general business litigation. He joined Berry &
Block from Livingston & Mattesich. Mr. Plamondon previously
served as general counsel with Chameleon Systems,
Inc., a semiconductor company developing next generation communications
technology. As the general counsel, he advised management on corporate
structure, finance, contracts, property, employment, and tort issues.
Primarily, he managed the company's intellectual property portfolio. He:
- Negotiated and drafted intellectual property licenses;
- Implemented trademark, copyright and trade secret protections;
- Policed trademark uses; and
- Developed strategies to address third party infringement of client
intellectual property rights and to avoid client infringement of third party IP rights.
Mr. Plamondon completed his J.D. degree with a certificate in
Intellectual Property and High Tech Law at Santa Clara University School
of Law in May 2000. While in law school, he served as a Judicial Extern
for the Honorable Ronald M. Whyte in the U.S. District Court for the
Northern District of California.
Prior to working in the federal court, Mr. Plamondon worked for Intel Corporation where he
provided legal support relating to private equity placements; trademark dilution,
patent infringement, corporate nondisclosure agreements, Year 2000 legal issues for Corporate Business
Development, and Blue-Sky issues. Mr. Plamondon also authored several legal training
programs used throughout Intel.
Before he began his legal career, Mr. Plamondon worked as an Investment Brokerage Assistant for BankAmerica
Investment Services where he assisted clients with management of their securities
portfolios; organized and presented financial planning seminars; and
trained Bank of America staff on sales referrals techniques.
Mr. Plamondon earned his B.S. degree with honors in International Business
Management from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis
Obispo, California. He studied mergers and acquisitions, global strategy
and law, and international joint ventures.
Mr. Plamondon is an active member of Intellectual Property and Antitrust
& Unfair Competition Sections of the California State Bar and the
Intellectual Property Section of the Sacramento County Bar. Mr. Plamondon serves as the Vice President of the
Intellectual Property Section of the Sacramento Bar, and is a member of
the Trade Secret Committee of the California State Bar.
